Common problem of high and low pressure hydraulic cylinder

What's the common problem of high pressure and low pressure hydraulic cylinder? Oil leakage under 

the low pressure.

There two types of oil leakage. One is rod leakage, visible. The other one is inside the cylinder, invisible. 

They have the common characteristics, leakage under the low pressure. General cause by the following 

situations.

Seals structure.

Let’s analyze the relationship between Seals lips and cylinder. (Using Rod Seals as an example.)

1.  Rod Seals has internal and external lip, external lip install in the groove contact with outer wall,

 internal lip contact with the surface of the piston rod. Lips have interference, equals to create two 

circumferential surface, but also create a rebounding force. How to determine the circumferential 

area and force? DSH Seals tell you now.

2.  Internal and external lip has chamfers, the interference in the same seal is certain, the angle of 

the chamfers determine the circumferential area. The value of force determines by seal material 

hardness, groove depth and the lips interference.

3.  After analyzing the above situations, seal lips have two circumferential surface, whether the force 

distribute uniformly or not, the force on the circumferential surface can not be zero, if one side 

force is zero, it will cause leakage.

4.  Based on above analyzing, the Seals structure is a major factor for causing oil leakage.

Roughness of the lips contact surface.

Because the Seals in the cylinder running has trace movement. If the roughness is too large, the oil 

will be kept in the surface. When reach the low pressure, if seals to recover, the oil will be remained

in the leakage side. If long term use, it will cause leakage.

Use for half a year, it begin to leak.

The main factors are as follows, lips aging, the lips aging process include oil aging and temperature 

aging. The aging process is the lips force reduce gradually process. When it reach to a certain extent,

it will cause oil leakage. When the cylinder manufacturer choose the seals, it is the important point 

to control the seals quality.
